This is hands-down the best burger that I have eaten to date. The first time that I bit into a Joyce Burger, I knew that I was unlikely to ever ever have a better one in the near future, and to date, I haven't. This burger is also the source of the best memory that I have with my father-in-law. Faye and her mom were on their way to a baby shower, so Dad and I were left home alone to sleep in and do as we pleased. Deciding to go to Ulysses for brunch was probably the best decision of our relationship. We love our burgers done the same way: cooked medium with cheddar cheese. We both went without the onion marmalade (again, I'm mostly a burger purest), and we devoured our burgers. As many of you might know, there is that awkward moment when you look at your dining partner and seek acceptance to order more food, hoping that your partner might agree. On this day, Dad and I both knew that weren't done. These burgers were so good that we ordered a third to split between us for breakfast. If you have never had a burger that good, then you need to head to Ulysses now!
1. Doneness: Dad and I ordered our burgers at a medium doneness, and they were cooked perfectly. There was a slightly seared exterior to provide a minimal textural crunch, and there was a pink and juicy interior that allowed for a perfect bite. Ulysses' chef knows how to cook a burger, so I gave this one an 18 out of 20 for doneness.
2. Juiciness: The locality of this sourced beef made for a perfect patty. This was easily a 2 or 3 napkin burger that still maintained texture. This its an amazing burger! I give this burger a 20 out of 20 for juiciness.
3. Bun: The Joyce Burger is served on a Brioche bun, which I would usually cite as a negative criterion. However, this bun has a firm exterior and a soft interior that allows for the burger to have a firm bite without being chewy. There are few buns that I would want in place of this one. I give this burger a 17 out of 20 for the bun.
4. Toppings: Is there anything better than crispy bacon and locally sourced produce? The lettuce and tomato were fresh and crisp, and there was little to ask for beyond what was already provided...and then you got the homemade pickles. I give the toppings for this burger a 20 out of 20.
5. Overall Impression: As I have already stated, this is the best burger that I have had in my life. The meat is juicy, the toppings are fresh and crisp, and the experience is unrivaled. For an added kick, order the pretzel appetizer and spread the mustard and cheese sauces on the burger! My overall impression score for this burger is a 20 out of 20.
