When it comes to the culinary world, I have no greater hero than Guy Fieri. While he's best known for his shows
on Food Network; such as Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives; Guy's Big Bite; and Guy's Grocery Games; what I love the
most about him is his bold style of cooking and his reinvention of classic American dishes. This is best represented
in his cookbook, Guy Fieri Food: Cookin' It, Livin' It, Lovin' It. Faye and I got to watch him cook in Atlantic City on
our honeymoon, so when we heard that Guy was opening a restaurant in AC, we knew we had to go. We went on
our summer one day vacation last week, and we made sure to center our trip around visiting the Chophouse.
The restaurant is located in Caesar's Atlantic City Casino and Hotel. As the photo above shows, the restaurant
is immediately at the top of the escalator. It's impossible to miss the neon sign or the giant Guy Fieri wine corks
hanging from the ceiling. When you first walk in to the restaurant, you'll see the oval bar with large TV screens
overhead broadcasting whatever sports happen to be on that day. Faye and I were there for a Saturday lunch, so
the policy was to seat ourselves. We had the choice to sit at the bar, at high-top tables, or high-top tables that had
booth seating on one side. We chose to sit at a high top and waited about 5 minutes before we got a menu. For
whatever reason, there only seemed to be 2 or 3 waiters on the floor at the time. That didn't matter though, since
the trip was about spending time with Faye. The menu was a limited to a lunch menu, but there were plenty of
great options. The menu itself came out fastened to a Guy logo burned-wood clipboard which was really cool.
Our server was kind but overly busy. She was serving quite a few tables at the same time, as well as serving as
the hostess. Once we were seated and ordered, Faye and I got to take a look out the huge, wall-sized window that
overlooks Atlantic City. We understand that there is another dining room in the back, but we didn't get a chance to
walk in there and take a look around. The restaurant, despite it being an upscale steakhouse, has a very casual
vibe which definitely represents Guy's lifestyle of great food and loud music. If you're looking for a place with great
food and a laid-back vibe, hen this is a place you have to try when you're in AC. Now, onto the food!
Faye started off with the Malibu Oysters served with Havarti Cream, Garlic, Spinach, and Crispy Potatoes. While
Faye prefers raw oysters, she did like the way the Chophouse prepared these ones. Think about them like an
upscale Clams Casino. They were a nice blend of the saltiness you expect with seafood, the creaminess of the
Havarti Cheese, and the added texture of the potato straws on top. While they're a bit pricy, this is an appetizer
that is fresh and on the lighter side (which is probably a good thing if you're planning on indulging in on of the many
steaks on the menu!). Oh yeah...the presentation was awesome! It looked like it came right out of a restaurant
on the docks!
For lunch, Faye went with the Rodeo Shrimp Dragon Roll, which contains Tempura Fried Shrimp, Crab Salad,
Spicy Tuna, Avocado, and Garlic Mayo. There was Wasabi and Pickled Ginger on the side, like you would get at
any good sushi restaurant. It's no secret that Faye loves sushi, and I mean LOVES sushi, but I was a
bit surprised that she chose to have sushi at the steakhouse. I never doubt anything that I see on a Guy Fieri
menu, but this roll blew me away. This was a cooked sushi roll, and Faye loved it. It was cut into 10 piece, but it
was surprisingly filling. It's served over two sauces that added the Dragon heat to the roll, and all of the ingredients
balanced well. The shrimp was crispy and perfectly fried, and the avocado provided a nice creaminess along with
the garlic mayo, but the tuna was overshadowed by all of the other flavors. As usual, the presentation was
beautiful, and Faye said she would gladly order it again. It definitely lived up to its name!
I ordered one of my favorite dishes on the face of the Earth: Chicken "Fried" Chicken. Guy's version comes with
a Cheddar Biscuit, Peppermill Sausage Gravy, Fried Leeks, and Local Honey. This was a sweeter version of the
dish, but the sweetness paired nicely with the savory biscuit. The chicken was fried to perfection, keeping the
thin batter crispy and the chicken extra juicy. I loved the pairing of the sweet and salty chicken batter with the
savoriness of the sausage gravy. The flavors blended together in perfect harmony. My only critiques would be
that there were quite a few sweet elements on the plate that could have used a bit more salt to balance the dish
overall, and the chicken was plated over the gravy which caused some of the breading to fall off the bottom of the
chicken. I would gladly eat this dish again, though.
While we both knew that we should have had a steak, be decided to go with lighter meals so we could try out
one of the desserts. We definitely made the right move there when we ordered the S'mores Tacos. These were
Waffle Taco Shells stuffed with warm Chocolate Brownie Batter and topped with Homemade Toasted Marshmallow,
Chocolate Sauce and White Chocolate shavings. This was quite possibly one of the best desserts I have ever had.
It's one of those desserts that is so rich that you know you shouldn't have another bite but you finish it anyway. The
Brownie was still creamy and smooth, the chocolate was decadent, and the marshmallow was sticky in the best
way possible. The toasting of the marshmallow gave the taco a nice hint of smokiness that broke up the
sweetness. You HAVE to try these. In fact, the girls sitting next to us asked us what it was when the tacos came
out and said they were going to have to order a plate as well.
While I'm a bit biased due to my admiration of Guy Fieri, the Chophouse is a restaurant that sets itself apart from
most of the other restaurants on the AC Boardwalk. If you're looking for a quality meal made with the best
ingredients and with an original spin on the classic recipe, then this is the place for you! There's a wide variety of
steaks, burgers, and seafood on the menu as well, that you will probably want to check out too (make sure to go for
dinner if you want the full menu). Next time you hit AC, make sure to check out Guy Fieri's Chophouse!
