Faye and I took some time today to head out to Weyerbacher Brewery for a special event, and we were lucky enough to get to try out an awesome food truck called Mucho Bueno. This morning, Weyerbacher released its Sunday Morning Stout, but to kick the event up a notch, they enlisted the help of Mucho Bueno to provide some great Brunch food to pair with their Breakfast Stout. This food truck often roams the streets of Philadelphia, but the two guys on the truck grew up just outside of Baltimore. After a brief conversation about the Baltimore Ravens, Faye and I placed our order for 3 Tacos and The Porker Sandwich. The menu isn't necessarily fixed, and they use social media to keep their customers up to date on what they'll be selling each day. The prices were very reasonable, and the guys on the truck were very welcoming and willing to talk while they took care of business. We did end up waiting in a line of about ten people for about 20-25 minutes, but I blame the craziness of the event, not their ability for the wait. Besides, people weren't specifically there for the food anyway....
When we were about half way through the line, which was about 40 minutes into the event, they did come out and take the Brisket off of the menu. While it was unfortunate that they sold out of a menu item so quickly, but it did seem that everyone had been ordering the Brisket (which didn't surprise me as that is an uncommon protein to find in the Northeast). Fortunately, the only Taco that Faye wasn't planning on ordering was the Brisket Taco. Instead, she ordered Smoked Chicken, Pulled Pork, and Sweet Potato Tacos. I went with The Porker, a Pulled Pork Sandwich with Cheddar, Garlic Bacon, Aji Sauce, Onions, and Homemade Tortilla Chips on the side. The Tacos seemed to be the big seller of the day, which was appropriate after reading the article on their truck. Mucho Bueno has been Zagat rated at one of the Top 10 Tacos you have to try in Philadelphia. After our lunch today, it was easy to see why.
Faye's trio of tacos were each topped with Pickled Onions, Salsa, and Aji Sour Cream Sauce and served on Philadelphia-made Corn Tortillas. While they had the same toppings, each one stood out from the others due to the protein, or lack thereof, and was made to order. The Smoked Chicken was moist, and the smoky flavor stood up to the toppings. The Pulled Pork was Faye's favorite. It was very well seasoned, slowly cooked and moist, yet it still had the texture that you want out of a meaty taco. The Sweet Potato Taco had a lot of promise, but it was a bit undercooked and, therefore, a bit hard to eat. Overall, the plate was full of flavor, fresh, and very filling.
The Porker was one of the better sandwiches that I have ever eaten out, and that includes at standard restaurants. The Pork was super-juicy, and it was seasoned in a way that didn't overpower the Bacon. I can't say that I noticed any Garlic flavor to the Bacon, but it was thick-cut and flavor-packed! The Aji Sauce provided a nice creaminess to the sandwich, and the perfect amount was spread onto the bun. The flavor came through without taking over my palate. The real surprise to the sandwich, much to my surprise, was the Pickled Onions. I'm not usually a huge fan of pickles other than the standard dill pickle, but these onions provided a brightness that popped in my mouth and really brought the whole experience full circle. The bun could have used a quick toast on the grill top. The chips were perfectly crispy, but they definitely could have used a hit of salt. All-in-all, I cannot rave about the balance of this sandwich, and I struggled to finish all of it (there was probably about 1/2 lb. of meat on it).
If you come across this food truck, you HAVE to give it a try. Faye swears by the tacos, and I will be telling everyone that I know about The Porker. I have always been a firm believer that food trucks are right up there with sit-down restaurants, and Mucho Bueno confirmed that belief. Check them out the first chance you get!
